New Site to Share Influenza Information

The Public Library of Science has launched a new website, PLoS Currents: Influenza, to facilitate sharing of information.

The open access site “is built on three key components: a small expert research community that PLoS is working with to run the website; Google Knol with new features that allow content to be gathered together in collections after being vetted by expert moderators; and a new, independent database at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) called Rapid Research Notes, where research targeted for rapid communication, such as the content in PLoS Currents: Influenza will be freely and permanently accessible.”

Gale Virtual Reference Library

In a hurry? Maybe you don’t have time to go to the library. Or, maybe you did go to the library and the volume of the reference book you need is not on the shelf where it is supposed to be. Maybe your paper or project is due tomorrow. Maybe it’s 3 a.m. and your biology class project is due TODAY and the library is closed. Before you turn to Google in desperation, the Gale Virtual Reference library is here to help save the day—and maybe help your grade, too.

JSU’s Houston Cole Library subscribes to a number of Gale reference books in science, nursing and medicine that you can access from your laptop in the library, at home, in your dorm, at a wireless hotspot at Starbucks or McDonald’s, anytime, anywhere you have Internet access, 24/7. All you have to do is login, using your student number and last name, to have the library’s electronic databases available for your research needs.

Blogs in Nursing Education

I came across a reference to an interesting article recently in theJanuary-February issue of the journal Computers, Informatics and Nursing. I saw it mentioned on a blog I found on the Yale University Nursing library Web site. The article title is The potential use of “blogs” in nursing education.” The abstract is available on PubMed here. This article explains what blogs are, and how they can be used in education to foster communication skills. The journal is available in print in the library, call number RT 50.5 .C64. If anyone would like a copy, I can send one.
