‘Health-at-every-size’ Approach Is Effective: Health-centered Weight Control Method Shows Promise

I thought that this article mentioned on  ScienceDaily was interesting and I thought that it was worth sharing.

ScienceDaily (2009-11-05) — Most weight-control strategies emphasize energy-restricted diets and increased physical activity — and most are not effective over the long term. In a study of a “weight-acceptance” intervention, researchers found that there could be long-term beneficial effects on certain eating behaviors using a weight-acceptance intervention approach.

Elsevier Health Sciences (2009, November 5). ‘Health-at-every-size’ Approach Is Effective: Health-centered Weight Control Method Shows Promise. ScienceDaily. Retrieved December 3, 2009, from http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/11/091104123025.htm#

The full text of the original article  is available via the Elsevier ScienceDirect database. Citation:

Interactive Flu Assessment Sites

Flu.gov has an interactive site that allows users to answer questions to help determine if they or their child might have the H1N1 flu.

Another site, presented by Emory University and Microsoft, allows users to take a flu self-assessment.

Both sites ask the user a series of questions, and help them decide what course of action to take, such as seeing a doctor.

New Site to Share Influenza Information

The Public Library of Science has launched a new website, PLoS Currents: Influenza, to facilitate sharing of information.

The open access site “is built on three key components: a small expert research community that PLoS is working with to run the website; Google Knol with new features that allow content to be gathered together in collections after being vetted by expert moderators; and a new, independent database at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) called Rapid Research Notes, where research targeted for rapid communication, such as the content in PLoS Currents: Influenza will be freely and permanently accessible.”

Medical Podcasts from Johns Hopkins

My Featured Website for today is one that I found when going through my book review cards that we get monthly from Choice magazine. This card was actually from April. I saved it to look at later.

As there has been interest in podcasts around the library recently, I took another look at Johns Hopkins Medicine Podcasts, Audio and Multimedia site.

Each one of the weekly Johns Hopkins Medicine News Roundup podcasts covers several different subjects, and they feature Elizabeth Tracey, director of electronic media for Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Rick Lange M.D., professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins and vice chairman of medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.  A recent podcast’s topics ranged from computer-based smoking cessation programs, swine flu, and diabetes risk prediction.  Also,  Hopkins PodBlog covers what each week’s news roundup podcast is about.

Other podcasts cover cancer, gastroenterology,  and neurology, and may be found here.

Johns Hopkins also offers more information about podcasts and how to subscribe.
