What is This?

The “this” referred to in the title is a QR code, short for Quick Response, a 2-dimensional barcode that can be used for a variety of purposes, including e-mail, Web links, and address book information. The codes  are appearing in magazine ads, stores and libraries.

I have posted some QR codes around 9th floor, in the call number areas that correspond to the ones on the Biology 103 Lab handout, available on the Web at http://www.jsu.edu/library/pdfs/handouts/BY103.pdf. If you scan the code with your smartphone’s camera using QR code reading software, it will display a link to the  URL for the handout.

Find QR code readers in the application store for your phone (iTunes Store, Android Market, Blackberry App World, etc.) by searching for QR. You may also find QR codes for various apps.

Have you filled out the Houston Cole Library Mobile Device Assessment Survey?  The link is available in an e-mail messages. Students can opt to enter a drawing for a $15 iTunes gift card.

This blog post doesn’t look bad in the WordPress Android App, which I used to post the first part. My smartphone typing skillz are not up to those of our students’.

Featured New Book

Parsons, Paul
The Science of Dr. Who
Baltimore, Md. : Johns Hopkins University Press, 2010
Q 173 .P277 2010

According to Choice, “Parsons, a scientist and journalist, is an unabashed fan of Doctor Who and does a good job of making the convoluted plots and characters decipherable, even to non-aficionados, and of explaining the research and science, often cutting edge, that has even a change of making the plots possible… “

The temperature might not have shown it lately, but it is fall. The trees have looked glorious lately, including this golden one outside the library.

The Houston Cole Library will be updating the software on its catalog server starting Monday, September 13. Installation will begin just after 12 a.m. Monday morning and may take as long as 3 days.

During the upgrade, Library patrons will not be able to renew books online
or request books from our Allies affiliates. Catalog searching should not be
affected, and database access will also work as usual.

To renew your books over the phone or for questions about Library operations, please call (256) 782-5758.

We apologize for any inconvenience, and appreciate your patience as we make improvements to help us better serve you.
